MUFSD alumni Caroline and Jake Danehy, co-founders of Fair Harbor (a lifestyle brand that
makes beachwear out of recycled plastic bottles), engaged Hommocks 7th graders on Zoom
following a two-week science unit where students took part in a Plastic Upcycle Challenge to
create a sellable product using only plastic waste. Students looked at examples of upcycling
from various companies, including Fair Harbor, as well as the story of the Recycled Orchestra
for inspiration. They then constructed projects and created an advertising campaign to
promote their products. Caroline and Jake talked about their experience starting and running
Fair Harbor and the importance of pursuing your passion. Students had the chance to ask
questions. We look forward to the Danehysʼ return in person this fall to speak with next year's
7th graders.
